ABOUT PRINT PRODUCTION Full details of the photographic process can be found on my Information page. This describes the equipment I use, and the film scanning process. Prints up to 13 x 19 inches (A3+) and panoramas up to 13 inches wide are produced in-house using the new Epson R2400 Ultrachrome K3 printer. The pigment-based prints (both black and white and colour) from the R2400 are stunning, and have a life span at least as long as traditional photographic prints. Larger prints are outsourced on the large format equivalent of the R2400 (Epson 7800 or 9800). I use a variety of archival matte papers, chosen to suit each image. This choice depends on a number factors, including aesthetic considerations of surface texture and paper weight, and how the ICC profile for each paper works with the image. From the Epson range, Velvet Fine Art gives excellent colour saturation and deep blacks. Hahnemuehle PhotoRag (188 and 308gsm) is a beautiful paper, with stunning colours, deep rich blacks and yielding excellent detail. Given it's image quality and archival properties, the 188gsm Hahnemuhle PhotoRag is my paper of choice for panorama images, being one of the few archival papers available in Australia in 13 inch rolls (from ImageScience in Melbourne). Three other excellent Hahnemuehle papers are the more textured Torchon, White Etching and German Etching. The surface of the Torchon particuarly suits images depending more on mood than detail, such as misty scenes and seascapes. Two other beautiful papers are Entrada Bright (300 gsm) and Kayenta Matte (205gsm) from the Moab Paper Company. Entrada Bright in particular has a rich depth to its colours combined with deep blacks that make it a very satisfying paper to print on. Red River's Aurora Art Card also gives good results for certain types of images, particularly ones with lower contrast. Wilhelm Imaging Research is the leading resource on information regarding print permanance. They have published an article showing that colour images printed using the R2400 on Epson Velvet Fine Art will last for longer than 60 years without any noticeable fading when displayed under glass. Similarly, black and white prints on Velvet Fine Art will last for greater than 110 years. Hahnemuhle papers, including their PhotoRag, are produced in accordance with DIN6738 and ISO9706 specifications for archive grade paper (read their certificate here), and are gauranteed to be resistant to fading for greater than 100 years. |
