The Equipment and Techniques page has details of the photographic gear, film scanning and printing I use to produce my images.

I was born in England, but have spent most of my life in Australia. After finishing school in Sydney, I pursued a number of interests while working in various jobs. I've worked as a painter and decorator, in the retail industry, and in a commercial photo-processing lab. During this time I also studied classical piano, an interest I continue to pursue. After working for quite a few years, itchy feet got the better of me and I decided to travel for a while. In Europe I rediscovered long-distance cycle touring, and this is probably the time my love affair with the outdoors and with landscape photography began.

After returning from Europe, I worked for a few more years, then jumped on my bicycle again to cycle around New Zealand for four months (covering 7200km over the whole country). All in all, I've pedalled over 30 000km on trips in Europe, Australia and New Zealand. I also enjoy running, and have competed in 3 half-marathons and 2 marathons - the Sydney and the Melbourne.

Once back in Sydney, I completed a Bachelor of Science degree (with Honours) in Biochemistry. I then completed my PhD in molecular biology and worked as a Post-Doctoral research Fellow, first at the University of Sydney, then at the University of New South Wales.

It was during my trip around NZ, and during my PhD studies that my interest in photography bloomed. I also found that hiking and bushwalking were the best ways to really see and feel the landscape. Driving a car or cycling is too fast for me now, and it's only by walking and hiking through wilderness that I can really get in touch with my surroundings.

I've been inspired by numerous landscape photographers, from great names such as Ansel Adams and the Westons, to Australian and New Zealand photographers such as Peter Dumbrovskis, Peter Lik, Nic Bishop, Craig Potton, Peter Jarver and Pete Dobre.

I have recently moved to Canberra, in the ACT, as it lies within a short drive of some of the best coastal and inland National Parks in eastern Australia. These include Kosciuszko, Morton, Namadgi, Nadgee and Croajingolong National Parks, plus many more.

As a final thought, I hope in some small way that my images can make a difference in peoples attitudes towards our planet. The natural world is more than just a place for weekend and holiday escapes. It sustains us, and without it life here will become untenable. If we learn to care a little more and consume a little less, we may stop the irrevocable loss of our remaining natural environments before it's too late.
